UEAA Steering Committee and General Assembly Meeting’s Account, Riga, 28-30 May 2008
According to the constitution and the decisions made during the Yalta meeting in 16-17 May 2007, the 5th General Assembly of the Union of European Academies for Science applied to Agriculture, Food and Nature and associated Workshop on “Renewable Energy Resources, Production and Technologies”, were hosted by the Latvia Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences. The schedule of events included the UEAA Steering Committee meeting, the Scientific Plenary Session and UEAA General Assembly on May 29, 2008, as well as the visit to the Latvian University of Agriculture, Study and Research Farm Vecauce of the Latvian University of Agriculture and the Latvian State Institute of Fruit Growing on May 30, 2008.
The following DELEGATES were present at the STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING on 28.06.2008:
1. Acad. Cristian HERA – President of the Romanian Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences “Gheorghe Ionescu-Sisesti” (AAFS - ROMANIA) and the president in charge of the UEAA.

The first half of 29.05.2008 was dedicated to the Workshop/Symposium on "Renewable Energy Resources, Production and Technologies". Foreign guests from 12 UEAA member countries, representatives of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, Latvia Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences, Latvian University of Agriculture, representatives from different research institutions, ministries, the production sector, non-governmental organizations and mass media participated.
Acad. Cristian HERA's opening speech was followed by a report of Martins ROZE – Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Latvia, and a speech of Acad. Baiba RIVZA – President of the LAAFS and vice-president of the UEAA. Besides, a letter from prof. Tatyana KOKE – Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Latvia to the General Assembly participants was presented.
Three PLENNARY SESSION speeches were held in continuation of the workshop, and 7 reports were presented in the Symposium sections. 16 posters were presented in frames of the SEMINAR. The speeches and posters are published in the General Assembly proceedings “Renewable Energy Resources, Production and Technologies”.
The UEAA Vth GENERAL ASSEMBLY STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING took place in the second half of the same day, opened by a speech of acad. Cristian HERA, President of the AAFS - ROMANIA and the president in charge of the UEAA.
Acad. Cristian HERA presented a report describing the activity of the Union from 25.06.2006. (date of the UEAA 4th GENERAL ASSEMBLY in Bucharest) until the 5th UEAA GENERAL ASSEMBLY. Further on participants discussed various possibilities to improve the activity developed by UEAA in the benefit of European agriculture, and proposals for future locations of the next UEAA General Assembly.
The following decisions were taken in the UEAA Vth GENERAL ASSEMBLY STEERING COMMITTEE and approved by voting:
1. To transfer the presidency of the European Academies for Science Applied to Agriculture, Food and Nature from the president of Romanian Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences acad. Cristian HERA to the president of Latvia Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences acad. Baiba RIVZA.
2. To organise the next UEAA event in 2009 in Germany. Proposals concerning topic of the seminar, concrete time and place of its realisation are welcome from the German side and shall be announced by the end of 2008.
3. To organise the next UEAA General Assembly and the Associated workshop in Ukraine in 2010 with an adequate promotion for attracting new members in the UEAA (the decision has been taken following the proposal of the Ukrainian side and the acknowledgment of prof. Volker HOFFMANN - representative of the Deutschland Dachverband Agrarforschung e.V. to change the place of the VIth UEAA General Assembly from Germany to Ukraine in 2010). Proposals concerning topic of the seminar, concrete time and place of its realisation are welcome from the Ukrainian side. The concrete topic of the associated workshop shall be announced by the end of June 2009.
4. To transfer the UEAA web site updating responsibility from Romanian Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences to Latvia Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences (in cooperation with Latvian Academy of Sciences). To maintain the web site in English language unless any of the member states introduces information in its own language proposed.
5. To elect the new members in the Steering Committee:
- Dr.Nils Vagstad, Director of Research, Bioforsk–Norwegian Institute for Agricultural and Environmental Research;
- Professor Emeritus Spyros Kyritsis, Secretary General, the Greek Agricultural Academy;
- Representative from Bulgaria (at the earliest convenience after finalizing the restructuring of the National Centre of Agricultural Sciences Bulgaria proposals are welcome).
6. To keep a continuity and high standard for the annually UEAA Workshop proceedings, in order to be distributed in the UEAA countries, FAO and the European Commission.
7. To keep a permanent connection with FAO Regional Office for Europe (FAO-REU) for Budapest and EURAGRI Secretariat from AARHUS University in Denmark, in order to organize joint actions. The new UEAA President and other members of the Steering Committee are encouraged to attend the XXII EURAGRI Members Conference, organized in Vilborg, Denmark – Research Centre Foulum (17-20 September 2008), with the topic on “Agricultural Research for Sustainable Development”.
The second day of the Vth GENERAL ASSEMBLY was dedicated to visit the Latvian University of Agriculture, Study and Research Farm Vecauce of the Latvian University of Agriculture and the Latvian State Institute of Fruit Growing, introducing the participants with work of the institutions visited, possibilities of alternative energy production and other aspects related to the topic.
